Job Summary:

Serve as a Teaching Specialist in the Department of Chemistry for one or more of the following courses. The number of sections required for a 50% appointment is listed behind each course:

Chem 103, General Chemistry I (Two sections)
Chem 104, General Chemistry II (Two sections)
Chem 108, Chemistry In Our World (Two sections)
Chem 116, Chemical Principles II (Two sections)
Chem 311, Inorganic Chemistry (Two sections)
Chem 327, Analytical Chemistry (One section)
Chem 329, Analytical Chemistry (One section)
Chem 342, Elementary Organic Chemistry Lab (Two sections)
Chem 343, Organic Chemistry I (Four sections)
Chem 344, Organic Chemistry Laboratory (One section and grading)
Chem 345, Organic Chemistry II (Four sections)
Chem 512, Advanced Synthesis and Laboratory Techniques (Two sections)
Chem 524, Chemical Instrumentation (Three sections)
Chem 561, Physical Chemistry I (Three sections, discussion only)
Chem 562, Physical Chemistry II (Three sections, discussion only)
Chem 563, Physical Chemistry I Laboratory (Three sections)
Chem 564, Physical Chemistry II Laboratory (Three sections)
Chem 565, Biophysical Chemistry (Two to four sections, discussion only)
Chem 728, Electronics for Chemical Instrumentation (Three sections)

One 50% appointment equals approximately 20 hours per week for the entire semester. Duties are similar to those of a teaching assistant and include the following:
-Teach lab and discussion sections
-Attend staff meetings
-Hold office hours
-Preparation time
-Proctor exams
-Grade assignments and exams

Responsibilities:

Teaches the quiz, tutorial, discussion or lab section(s) of a course or assists in the development of materials or programs under the direction of an academic staff or faculty member. May perform the same work as a Teaching Assistant, but is not a UW student.
  • 70% Facilitates classroom and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses including assessment of student performance
  • 10% Assists with the development of instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction under the direction of an academic staff or faculty member
  • 20% Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Minimum of B.S. in chemistry or related field required.

Qualifications:

College-level physical chemistry course required.

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 25% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 5 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Salary:

Minimum $50,000 ACADEMIC (9 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The salary for a full time (100%) position for an academic year (9 months). The salary for this Spring semester position will be prorated based on the appointment duration and percentage.

Additional Information:

There is a possibility this position could be extended in subsequent semesters to teach one or more of the courses listed on this PVL or similar courses within the department.
