Job Description

School Bus Driver: FULL TIME 

 

  • JOB DESCRIPTION: The school bus driver will operate school buses under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice; transport students and other authorized persons over regular routes to and from school, and on field, extracurricular and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.
  • Successful driver applicants will be trained to perform all driver duties in order to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Skills commensurate with job requirements as evidenced by some or all of the following:
  • Passing basic skills test based on the requirements of the position
  • Employment history in similar position(s)
  • References indicating satisfactory skills and abilities in similar position
  • Successful completion of training or certification programs related to position. (This could include, but is not limited to, one of the following: Current CDL, High School Diploma, GED, AA, BA, etc.), if applicable.
  • Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position
  • Successful completion of Bus Driver training program.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver's license Class B with passenger and school bus endorsement and with the air brake restriction removed.
  • Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must be First Aid certified or be willing to obtain First Aid certification with thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION

  • Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintain the physical and licensing requirements of a CDL bus driver as required.
  • Pass a yearly bus evacuation drill and maintain the physical requirements of removing children safely from the bus. Must possess sufficient strength and ability to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door.
  • Attend yearly in-service trainings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
  • Assess and correct issues involving safety.
  • Establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
  • Approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
  • Use basic computer programs to develop route sheets, enter timecard information and read, and respond to email.

  • Previous experience working with young people preferred.
  • Evidence of ability to manage large groups of young people.
  • Evidence of excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The bus driver will:
  • Efficiently operate a school bus on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
  • Maintain and update route sheets in a timely manner.
  • Communicate route changes and requirements to dispatch and management in a timely manner.
  • Service, inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by State and district policy.
  • Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety; report unsafe acts or conditions which required the attention of any person other than the driver.
  • Complete forms, records and reports as required by the State or local school district policies.
  • Complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the school district.
  • Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies declared by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Columbia School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality
  • Perform other school bus driver related duties as directed by local school district policies.
  • Accomplish all tasks in a professional manner. Model appropriate and healthy adult behavior. Interact with people and speak in a manner that reflects community standards of politeness, civility and human sensitivity.

 

JOB RELATED TASKS: The bus driver will:

  • Operate and service all school bus equipment and accessories including but not limited to fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, sanders, first aid kits, etc.
  • Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment.
  • Clean and service the school bus to include interior/exterior sweeping and washing, maintaining appropriate of fuel, oil and coolant, tire inflation levels, etc.
  • Operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State (minimum) school bus specification.
  • Perform basic first aid as appropriate which may include CPR.
  • Complete clerical tasks as assigned, both in writing and on computer; legible and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and other clerical activities as may be required.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person, over the telephone and by using the radio communications system. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 50-75 pounds or more, dependent on student weight. Must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly while performing student supervision duties.

  • Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, is driving a moving vehicle and can encounter all types of weather and road hazards. The employee may be exposed to weather extremes, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat or cold or ice conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
