The Marine Biology Research Division (MBRD) consists of research groups broadly in the fields of cell and developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary, and conservation biology, microbiology, and the physiology of marine organisms that encompasses more than 20 laboratories. Cell and Developmental Biology: biochemistry, functional genomics, ecotoxicology, and morphogenesis of marine invertebrates, including sea urchins, corals, and mollusks. Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology: phytoplankton ecology, coral reef ecology, evolution and development of marine invertebrates, conservation of marine organisms and habitats. Microbiology: diversity and distribution of marine viruses, bacteria, and phytoplankton, including symbiosis with marine animals, biogeochemistry, secondary metabolite production, and microbial adaptations to environmental extremes and other environmental stressors. Physiology: biomechanics and locomotion, sensory biology, bioluminescence, and biochemistry of marine animals, including host-symbiont relationships.
Under general supervision, the Program Research Associate will oversee the operations of a medium-sized laboratory, including providing work direction to graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to their training, and overseeing one or more lab assistants and staff research associates of lower rank. Contribute significant and original ideas and methods to research projects and independently perform a wide variety of experimental research techniques related to cellular biology and neurobiology of aquatic animals. Initiate, develop, implement, and ensure compliance with all required protocols. Execute specialized research procedures, ensure documentation of methods and results, prepare written reports, and contribute to the scope and depth of the lab research. Manage all aspects of laboratory operations, including overseeing equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, and ensuring regulatory compliance with EH&S and animal care standards. Support lab outreach and training by coordinating travel, organizing workshops and events that advance cellular biology and neurobiology of aquatic animals, and maintaining the lab’s online presence to engage the scientific community through web content and social media.
Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience understanding of complex, interdisciplinary research topics in cellular biology and neurobiology, including concepts, methods, and scientific terminology.
Advanced experience with software programs for presentations, writing, data analysis, and visualization (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, R, scientific graphics packages, etc.).
Theoretical knowledge of cellular biology, neurobiology, multi-omics science, and microscopy.
Experience with data analysis.
Proficiency in two-photon microscopy or confocal microscopy.
Demonstrated proficiency in transgenesis techniques such as Crispr/cas9 and adenoviruses-mediated gene knock-out and knock-in.
Demonstrated proficiency in mRNA and protein localization techniques such as Hybridization chain reaction (HCR) in situ mRNA hybridization, and immunostaining.
Demonstrated proficiency in gene sequencing techniques including single cell RNAseq, and/or single nucleus RNAseq.
Experience with website and social media design and management.
Familiarity with accounting, travel, and expense software.
Excellent planning and organizational skills to effectively work while providing support at all levels in managing day-to-day operations of a research program.
Demonstrated critical thinking in developing and optimizing innovative laboratory approaches, techniques, and procedures for experimental animals.
Demonstrated ability to keep accurate, orderly files and records.
Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
Ability to analyze, evaluate, and implement actions to develop and enhance laboratory polices, procedures and methods.
Skill, knowledge and demonstrated ability to provide independent work direction and training to other personnel working on projects and/or with programs.
Demonstrated ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academic, staff, student and volunteer employees and institutions/organizations.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $66,441 - $106,839 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $31.82 - $51.17
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
