Responsibilities:
The purpose of this role is to foster cohesion between product development, sourcing, and shop floor execution to ensure excellence in tooling assets and manufacturing equipment. This position collaborates with multiple functions to drive efficiency and minimize re-work.
- Work closely with Design Engineers and Material Scientists to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability for the chosen process and materials.
- Work with Procurement and Supplier Quality to ensure that appropriate suppliers are chosen and are capable of meeting qualification requirements.
- Work with Project Managers to ensure project needs are met.
- Drive adherence to safety, quality, delivery, and cost expectations with external suppliers
Tooling Lifecycle Management
- Lead CAPEX Planning for tooling.
- Specify tooling requirements for procuring assets at suppliers including tooling material/components; # of cavities; and technical requirements.
- Manage procurement of tooling assets including budget, schedule, qualification through close out.
- Develop and approve preventative maintenance plans.
- Support required tooling changes for engineering or manufacturing needs.
- Rationalize assets no longer required.
Manufacturing Equipment Lifecycle Management
- Define manufacturing equipment needs to support production.
- Design and develop line equipment and fixturing.
- Develop capacity plans and manage machines and equipment.
- Define high level design standards for equipment, ergonomics, and safety.
- Define global equipment standards such as preferred PLC, Hardware, Robotics, etc.
Process Leadership
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including but not limited to Injection Molding, Casting, Dies, Machining.
- Specific knowledge of manufacturing equipment such as testers, high pressure air, laser welding, ultrasonic welding, etc.
- Lead strategic efforts to enhance capabilities in plant and suppliers to advance business goals.
- Benchmark external suppliers and internal power users to drive best in class standards for process excellence.
- Support DFMEA/PFMEA and risk assessment efforts.
Design for Manufacturability
- Provide material recommendation and selection support based on design specification, regional availability, etc. in partnership with Sourcing & Materials Science teams.
- Evaluate all new product designs to support MSA's ESG goals with respect to tooling, process, and material selection impacts and implement opportunities as appropriate.
- Leverage technology to evaluate and optimize part designs to meet cost and functional & sustainability targets.
- Review drawings and engineering documentation to ensure that designs are manufacturable and able to be inspected.
- Understand functional and standards-driven performance requirements.
- Leverage standard design components and elements to optimize manufacturability.
- Leverage DFM knowledge to identify cost impacts and risks based on design proposals.
Supplier Management
- Identify manufacturers with capability to support MSA design requirements.
- Lead manufacturing reviews with suppliers for capability, production readiness, and technical issue resolution.
- Support supplier development activities in core manufacturing areas to drive key business objectives.
- Be key technical liaison between manufacturing suppliers and engineering/sourcing teams.
- Review and validate repair and maintenance quotes from suppliers before PO's are issued.
Continuous Improvement
- Establish and monitor metrics related to tooling and equipment delivery, seeking opportunities to drive improvements to support program goals.
- Propose and manage strategic efforts to improve production capabilities.
- Partner with automation peers to drive opportunities to apply technology.
- Stay informed of industry-leading technologies (technology reviews, roadmap, etc.)
- Document and leverage lessons learned across programs and projects.
- Maintain cross-organizational knowledge sharing with CoP activities.
- Monitor and track key milestones for custom parts with updates to project teams.
Qualifications:

Education & Experience required:
- BS degree in appropriate discipline required from an ABET accredited program.
- Staff Engineer I - No experience required
- Staff Engineer II – 2+ years relevant experience
- Staff Engineer III – 3+ years relevant experience
- Senior Staff Engineer – 5+ years relevant experience
Education & Experience preferred:
- Lean Certification
- Project Management Certification
- MBA or MS in a relevant field
- Experience in developing and maintaining tooling and manufacturing assets to support production at multiple sites.
- Experience communicating and collaborating with cross functional teams and external vendors at multiple sites.
- Proven project management experience including driving process change in industrialization and development of project plans and work breakdown structures to facilitate assigned projects.
