Working under the direction of the Chair of Aviation Sciences, this position serves as the Chief Instructor for all FAA Part 141 Pilot School courses and is accountable for maintaining the Pilot School's operations in full compliance with FAA regulations. The Chief Instructor supervises Flight Instructors, Ground Instructors, Dispatch staff, Scheduling teams, and administrative personnel to ensure smooth and efficient operations. They are responsible for ensuring accurate record-keeping and adhering to both FAA regulations and university policies. Additionally, the Chief Instructor ensures that all training and flight activities are standardized, effective, and efficient, maintaining a high-quality, student-centered approach to education. They are tasked with providing students with the necessary guidance throughout their training journey. The role also oversees the organization and facilitation of required monthly Part 141 safety meetings, ensuring that all safety protocols are communicated and followed. The Chief Instructor actively participates in and coordinates with the Aviation Sciences Safety Committee for the development and implementation of safety programs. They also collaborate with the faculty Curriculum Committee to ensure curriculum alignment with program goals. Other tasks and responsibilities are performed as assigned by the Department Chair. Compensation is based on qualifications and experience.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Oversees effective and efficient pilot training courses and activities under FAR and ; oversees the standardization of aircraft operation and training procedures; oversees adherence to flight training curriculum; participates with faculty curriculum committee in creation and development of flight training curriculum; supervises the training and evaluation of flight instructors, check instructors and assistant chief instructors; participates in faculty and other coordination meetings; and, participates in hiring flight instructors.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of student and instructor records and compliance with TSA regulations. Conducts flight and ground instruction as necessary. Participates in the development and implementation of School safety initiatives. Maintains proficiency and currency in FAA Certification. Promotes adherence to aviation and TSA regulations and UVU policies, procedures and safety practices. Supervises the administration of CATS testing center. Participates in School development of policy and procedures in conjunction with faculty.
  • Oversees operation of aircraft maintenance flights. Oversees the implementation of safety policies and procedures. Participates in flight evaluation boards. Plans and conducts regular standardization meetings. Reviews aircraft incidents, accidents, pilot training issues and other safety concerns and make recommendations to the Chair and Director of Safety.
  • Provides leadership for the Dispatch program, operational procedures and guidelines to ensure effective aircraft scheduling and dispatch. Evaluates Dispatch program performance, customer service, and data management.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with an appropriate degree in a field of study directly related to the summary of duties plus professional experience related to the program or discipline. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited institution with either an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate or Commercial Pilot Certificate and five years experience teaching in an academic setting. Program-specific minimum qualifications require a Bachelor's Degree.

Licenses/Certifications
FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Airplane Single-engine Land, Airplane Multi-engine Land, and Instrument Airplane ratings. Current FAA Flight Instructor Certificate with Airplane Single-engine, Airplane Multi-engine, and Instrument Airplane ratings. Current and appropriate FAA Medical Certificate. Current flight review and instrument privileges. Must meet FAA Part 141 Chief Instructor minimum qualifications.
